Politicians of widely divergent political orientations think testing students will improve learning. Testing has increased dramatically in the past ten years, and if it worked in the simplistic way that some politicians seem to think, kids today would be the most learned students ever.

It’s easy to feel like education is out of our hands. We try
to help our own children “get through” the system. We do our best to
encourage learning in our own classrooms or we try to integrate new
policies within our schools or boards. But somehow the big picture and
major decisions are someone else’s responsibility.
